Dark Planet (Russian: Обитаемый остров, romanized: Obitaemyy ostrov, lit. “The Inhabited Island”) is a 2008 Russian science fiction film, divided into two parts and directed by Fyodor Bondarchuk.
In a dystopian future, a blond Russian knight, Maxim Kammerer, travels on a spaceship on a return trajectory to his home planet but an asteroid fragment sends his ship into failure and it crash-lands on the post-apocalyptic planet of Saraksh, ruled by a strictly military totalitarian regime governed by an oligarchy of Generals and Sub Commanders who fight to contain the enemies of the people called: “Degenerates”.
The regime to keep the people united through radio towers induces auditory and visual hallucinations, that is, it brainwashes its citizens.
Maxim Kammerer after the crash on Saraksh becomes involved in the political feud of its leaders.
The film has never been translated into Italian, or English, only Russian, or German. We saw it in Russian with English subtitles. An authentic masterpiece.
The main actor, who plays the protagonist Maxim, but called by locals as Maksim, Vasiliy Sergeevich Stepanov
he tried to take his own life in 2017 by jumping from the fifth floor of a building after falling into a deep depressive state.

The film “Dark Planet” (Russian: Obitaemyy ostrov, lit. “The Inhabited Island”) is a film adaptation of the 1969 novel “Obitaemyy ostrov”, written by Arkady and Boris Strugatsky. The book was published in English as “Prisoners of Power” and is part of the Noon Universe series.
The novel “Obitaemyy ostrov” is set in the 22nd century and tells the story of a protagonist of the Free Search Group who makes an emergency landing on an unknown planet, where he is forced to stay. The inhabitants of this planet still live at a primitive level, facing social problems, poor ecology and an unstable world.
The book explores themes of science fiction and society, offering an engaging and detailed narrative on power dynamics and interpersonal relationships in a futuristic context.
